How much to tip a caterer
Most couples tip their caterer 16–20% of the food and drink bill, unless a gratuity is already in the contract (Zola 2026 Wedding Spend Survey, 2026). Many caterers add an automatic gratuity of about 18–20% (Zola, 2026), so read the contract before you plan a tip.
Service charge or gratuity?
These sound the same but they are not. A service charge usually goes to the business to cover overhead and staffing. A gratuity goes to the people who served you. Look for phrases like "gratuity included" or "staff gratuity" in your contract. If you only see "service charge", a separate tip is still customary.
Flat tips per person
If you would rather hand out envelopes, these are the amounts couples typically give each person:
| Who | Typical flat tip each |
|---|---|
| Catering manager or captain | $100 – $200 |
| Chef | $50 – $100 |
| Servers | $20 – $50 |
| Kitchen staff and bussers | $10 – $30 |
Source: (Zola, 2026).
Worked example: an $8,000 catering bill
Your bill for food and drink, before tax, is $8,000, and the contract has no gratuity in it.
| Approach | Math | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Percentage, low end | $8,000 × 16% | $1,280 |
| Percentage, high end | $8,000 × 20% | $1,600 |
| Flat tips | 1 captain, 1 chef, 6 servers, 2 kitchen staff | $290 – $660 |
The two methods can give quite different numbers. Many couples pick the percentage, then use the flat amounts to decide how to split it if they want to hand tips out personally.
Tipping tips
- Read the contract early. Know whether gratuity is included before you set your budget.
- Prepare envelopes in advance. Label them and give them to a trusted person to hand out at the end of the night.
- Put the tip in your budget. It is easy to forget. Add it to your wedding budget calculator under catering or contingency.
- Check the whole catering bill. The catering cost per person calculator shows the food, service charge and tax before you tip.
