Where to start with your wedding budget
Most couples begin with one question: what does a wedding actually cost? The national averages are a useful starting point. The Knot puts the average US wedding at $34,000 (The Knot, 2026), and Zola's 2026 figure is $36,000 (Zola, 2026). Your number depends far more on your guest count and where you live than on any national average, which is why our tools ask for both.
Here is the order we suggest:
- Get a realistic total. The wedding cost estimator uses typical costs in your state and your guest count to give you a range.
- Split it into categories. The wedding budget calculator turns your total into dollar amounts for the venue, food, photos and everything else. If you just want to see the typical shares, the budget breakdown shows them as percentages.
- Price the big vendors. The venue alone is about 17% of a typical budget (Zola, 2026). Use the venue cost calculator, then the photographer and planner tools, to check quotes against typical ranges.
- Sort out the cake. The cake calculator works out servings from real tier sizes, so you don't order too much or too little.
Leave room for the surprises
Budgets slip. In Zola's research, 69% of couples went over their first budget (Zola, 2026), and costs couples didn't plan for made up about 9% of total spend (Zola, 2026). That is why the budget calculator keeps a contingency line. Treat it as part of the plan, not as spare money.
How these calculators work
Every tool shows the assumptions behind its answer and lets you change them. When we use an average or a price range, we link to where it came from and when we checked it. When we couldn't find a reliable figure, we ask you for your own quote instead of guessing. You can read the details on our how we calculate page.
Your answers stay in your browser. You can copy a result, share a link with your partner, or save it as a PDF to take to vendor meetings.
Feeding a crowd as well? The catering calculators cover cost per guest and tipping, and the event setup tools size your dance floor and tent.
