How the wedding venue cost estimate works

A typical wedding venue costs $6,900 to $10,300, and the venue is usually about 17% of the total budget (Zola Wedding Cost Index, 2026). We start from that range and adjust it for your wedding:

  1. Guest count. Bigger guest lists need bigger rooms. We assume the typical range describes about 145 guests and scale it to your number.
  2. State. We adjust for local prices using typical wedding costs in your state.
  3. Day and season. We take off the saving for your date. Only the largest saving that applies is used, so a Friday in winter counts as off-season, not both.
  4. Catering. If your venue includes food, we add the typical price per person for the style you pick (Zola, 2026).

How much your date can save

Date Typical saving Source
Saturday, May–October None (full price) —
Friday 10–15% (Zola, for catering, 2026)
Sunday 15–20% (Zola, for catering, 2026)
Weekday, or November–April 20–30% (Zola, 2026)

Zola's Friday and Sunday figures are for catering. We use them for venues too because venues often price days the same way, but check each venue's own rates.

Worked example: the same venue on three different days

Here is a venue for 120 guests at national prices, venue only, in peak season:

Date Estimated venue cost Per guest
Saturday $5,700 – $8,500 $48 – $71
Friday $4,900 – $7,700 $41 – $64
Weekday $4,000 – $6,800 $33 – $57

The Saturday range is $6,900 to $10,300 × 120 ÷ 145. Moving to a weekday takes another 20–30% off. On a mid-sized wedding that can be the price of the photographer or the flowers.

Tips to keep wedding venue cost down

  • Ask what the fee includes. Tables, chairs, linens, setup, cleanup and security are sometimes in the price and sometimes extra.
  • Look for service charges and minimums. Some venues charge a percentage on top of the rental, or require you to spend a minimum amount on their food.
  • Check the guest limit before you fall in love. A room that is too small for your list is not a bargain.
  • Price the food too. If the venue lets you bring your own caterer, compare its package with our catering cost per person calculator.
  • See the whole picture. The average wedding cost estimator shows whether the venue fits a realistic total for your state.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a wedding venue cost?

Zola's 2026 Wedding Cost Index puts the average wedding venue at $8,573, with a typical range of $6,900 to $10,300. The venue is about 17% of a typical wedding budget.

What is the average wedding venue cost per person?

If the typical range covers a wedding of about 145 guests, that is roughly $48 to $71 per guest for the venue alone. Venues that include catering cost much more per person, because food is usually the bigger cost.

Is a Friday or Sunday wedding cheaper?

Usually, yes. Zola says Friday catering runs about 10–15% less than Saturday and Sunday about 15–20% less. Many venues price their days the same way, so ask for each day's rate.

When is wedding venue off-season?

Peak wedding season runs from May through October. Zola says winter weekends and weekday dates can save around 20–30% on most vendor costs.

Should I choose a venue that includes catering?

All-inclusive venues are simpler to plan and the price is easier to compare. A venue-only space gives you more choice of caterer and can cost less if you pick a simple style. Price both ways before you decide.
