Assumptions used (you can edit these)

Before a meal: 4–6 pieces per guest. Source: The Takeout: "Here's How Many Appetizers You Need Based On The Size Of Your Party" (2024)

Guests eat the most in the first hour and slow down after that. Plan about 6 kinds for fewer than 45 guests and about 8 for bigger groups. Source: What's Cooking America: "Appetizers To Serve Per Person?"

These amounts are planning estimates. Appetites, recipes and portion sizes vary, so adjust for your crowd. How we calculate

How many appetizers per person?

It depends on one question: is a meal coming after the appetizers?

  • Before a meal: plan 4–6 pieces per guest (The Takeout, 2024). You want guests happy, not too full for dinner.
  • Appetizers as the meal: guests eat about 5 pieces in the first hour and about 3 for each hour after that (What's Cooking America). A longer party needs more food, but not as much more as you might think.

When appetizers are the meal: pieces per guest by hour

Party length Pieces per guest
1 hour 5
2 hours 8
3 hours 11
4 hours 14

Quick chart by guest count

Guests Before a meal As the meal, 3 hours Kinds to serve
25 100–150 275 6
50 200–300 550 8
100 400–600 1,100 8
150 600–900 1,650 8

Total pieces, before any buffer.

Worked example: a 3-hour open house for 40

There is no sit-down dinner, so appetizers are the meal. You add the default 10% buffer.

  • Per guest: 5 in the first hour + 3 × 2 more hours = 11 pieces
  • 40 guests × 11 = 440 pieces
  • Add 10%: 484 pieces
  • 40 guests is under 45, so make about 6 kinds, roughly 81 of each

Make a little more of the filling choices, like mini sandwiches or meatballs, and a little less of the light ones.

Tips for planning appetizers

  • Mix light and filling. Pair fresh bites like fruit skewers and vegetable cups with heartier ones like chicken skewers, sliders or stuffed mushrooms.
  • Mix hot and cold. Cold platters can go out early, which frees up your oven for the hot pieces.
  • Bring food out in waves. Half at the start and the rest over the next hour keeps platters looking full.
  • Label everything. Small cards help guests with allergies or food rules pick safely.
  • Plan dessert too. If there is cake, the cake calculator works out servings from tier sizes.

Frequently asked questions

How many appetizers per person?

Plan 4 to 6 pieces per person when a full meal follows. When appetizers are the whole meal, plan about 5 pieces per person for the first hour and 3 for each hour after that.

How many appetizers for 50 guests?

Before a meal, 50 guests need about 200–300 pieces. For a 3-hour party where appetizers are the meal, plan about 550 pieces, before any extra.

How many appetizers for 100 people?

For 100 guests before a meal, plan about 400–600 pieces. If appetizers are the meal for 3 hours, plan about 1,100.

How many different appetizers should I serve?

A common rule is about 6 kinds for fewer than 45 guests and about 8 kinds for bigger groups. Fewer kinds in bigger batches are easier to make and serve.

Why do guests eat less after the first hour?

People arrive hungry and eat the most early on. After the first hour they slow down, talk more and graze, so each extra hour needs fewer pieces per person.
