Zola's typical national range for a wedding photographer. We assume it describes the most common 8-hour package, turn it into a price per hour, and multiply by your hours. Real photographers often charge a base fee plus extra hours, so short bookings can cost a bit more per hour. Source: Zola Wedding Cost Index 2026 (2026)

How we estimate wedding photographer cost

The average wedding photographer costs $4,400, and most couples pay between $3,500 and $5,300 (Zola Wedding Cost Index, 2026). Zola also notes that the most common package is 8 hours of coverage (Zola, 2026).

We use those two facts to build your estimate:

  1. Price per hour. We assume the typical range describes an 8-hour package. That works out to about $438 to $663 per hour.
  2. Your hours. We multiply by the hours you plan to book.
  3. Your state. We adjust for local prices, using how typical wedding costs in your state compare with the US average.
  4. Extras. A videographer uses Zola's typical videography range of $3,200 to $4,800. For a second shooter, an engagement session or an album, you add your photographer's quote, because we have not found reliable averages for those.

What packages usually include

Package Hours Photographers Engagement session Album
Basic 6–8 1 Sometimes an add-on Not usually
Standard 8–10 1–2 Usually included Often an add-on
Premium 10+ 2 or more Included Usually included

Package tiers as described by Zola (Zola, 2026).

Worked example: 10 hours in California

Say you want a full day of coverage, 10 hours, for a wedding in California. Typical wedding costs in California are about 1.29 times the US average, so:

Step Low High
Price per hour, national $438 $663
× 1.29 for California $565 $855
× 10 hours, to the nearest $100 $5,600 $8,500

If your photographer quotes you, say, $800 for a second shooter (an example, not an average), tick "Second shooter" and type it in. The range moves up by exactly that amount.

Tips for booking a photographer on budget

  • Book the hours you actually need. Write out your day. If nothing important happens in the last two hours of the reception, you may not need them covered.
  • Ask what happens after the wedding. Delivery time, number of edited photos and print rights matter as much as the hours.
  • Compare quotes line by line. One package might include an engagement session and an album while another does not, which can make the cheaper quote more expensive in the end.
  • Plan the rest of the budget around your priority. Use the wedding budget calculator to move money into photography from categories you care less about.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a wedding photographer?

Zola's 2026 Wedding Cost Index puts the average wedding photographer at $4,400, with most couples paying between $3,500 and $5,300. Where you live, how many hours you book and extras like a second shooter all change the price.

How many hours of wedding photography do I need?

The most common package is 8 hours. That usually covers getting ready, the ceremony, portraits and the first part of the reception. Small or short weddings can often do with 6 hours, while long days with a lot happening may need 10 or more.

What does a second shooter cost?

Prices vary a lot between photographers, and we have not found a reliable average. Some include a second shooter in larger packages and some charge by the hour. Ask for it as a separate line in the quote and add it in the calculator.

Is the photographer cost per hour the same everywhere?

No. Photographers in high-cost areas charge more. The calculator adjusts for your state using typical wedding costs there compared with the US average.

What percentage of the wedding budget goes to photography?

Zola says photography is about 9% of a typical wedding budget. If photos are your top priority, it is normal to spend more and cut back somewhere else.
