How this wedding cost estimator works
The average wedding cost in the US was $34,000 for weddings held in 2025, with 117 guests on average (The Knot Real Weddings Study, 2026). Zola, surveying couples marrying in 2026, puts it at $36,000 for 145 guests (Zola First Look Report, 2026). Those are useful headline numbers, but almost nobody spends exactly the average. Where you live and how many people you invite move the total far more than anything else.
So the calculator works in three steps:
- Your state's typical range. Zola publishes a typical low-to-high cost range for 49 states (Zola Wedding Cost Index, 2026). If you leave the state set to "United States", we use the average of all those ranges: $26,700 to $40,100.
- Your style. We split that range into three equal parts. Budget uses the lower third, mid-range the middle third, and premium the upper third.
- Your guest count. We assume the range describes a wedding of about 145 guests (Zola's 2026 average) and scale it to your number. Twice the guests means roughly twice the cost.
The category breakdown splits the middle of your range using Zola's average spend for each vendor type, so you can see roughly how much might go to the venue, the caterer, the photographer and so on.
Worked example: 150 guests in Texas
Say you are planning a mid-range wedding for 150 guests in Texas.
| Step | Math | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Texas typical range | From the Zola index | $25,400 – $38,100 |
| Middle third (mid-range) | Range width $12,700 ÷ 3 = $4,233 per third | $29,633 – $33,867 |
| Scale to 150 guests | × 150 ÷ 145, rounded to the nearest $100 | $30,700 – $35,000 |
| Cost per guest | Midpoint $32,900 ÷ 150 | About $219 |
That is a little below the national average even though the guest list is bigger than average, because typical wedding prices in Texas sit near the middle of the country. Run the same wedding in New York and the range jumps to roughly $52,400 and up.
How to bring your wedding cost down
- Trim the guest list first. It is the one number that touches almost every line of the budget: catering, rentals, invitations, the size of the venue and even the cake.
- Look at off-peak dates. Zola says winter weekends and weekday weddings can save around 20–30% on most vendor costs (Zola, 2026). A Friday or Sunday in the shoulder season is often an easy win.
- Leave room for surprises. Service charges, taxes and small extras add up. Our wedding budget calculator sets aside a contingency for exactly this.
- Price your biggest line items early. The venue and catering are usually the largest costs. Get two or three quotes for each before you commit to a total.
- Compare categories, not just the total. The wedding budget breakdown shows how couples typically split their spending, so you can see where you are above or below the norm.
