Where these wedding budget percentages come from

Most budget splits you find online are someone's rule of thumb. These come from data. Zola's 2026 Wedding Cost Index lists what couples spend on average for each vendor type (Zola Wedding Cost Index, 2026). We turned those averages into percentages in three steps:

  1. Set aside 9% for hidden costs. That is Zola's own figure for how much service fees, taxes and extras add on average (Zola, 2026).
  2. Group related vendors together, for example the dress, alterations, suit and hair and makeup into "Attire & beauty".
  3. Share out the remaining 91% in proportion to each group's average spend, then round to whole percents so the total is exactly 100%.

The full wedding budget breakdown:

Category Share Zola average spend
Venue 18% $8,573
Photography & video 18% $8,393
Catering 15% $6,927
Flowers & decor 13% $6,345
Planner 9% $4,047
Attire & beauty 8% $3,757
Music & entertainment 3% $1,567
Wedding rings 3% $1,500
Cake & desserts 2% $917
Invitations & stationery 1% $500
Officiant 1% $325
Transportation 0% Not available
Contingency 9% —

Worked example: a $25,000 budget

Apply the typical percentages to $25,000 and you get:

Category Share Amount
Venue 18% $4,500
Photography & video 18% $4,500
Catering 15% $3,750
Flowers & decor 13% $3,250
Planner 9% $2,250
Attire & beauty 8% $2,000
Music & entertainment 3% $750
Wedding rings 3% $750
Cake & desserts 2% $500
Invitations & stationery 1% $250
Officiant 1% $250
Contingency 9% $2,250

The venue line works out to $4,500. If the venues you like quote more than that, you already know you will need to take money from somewhere else, before you sign anything.

How to adjust the breakdown for your wedding

  • All-inclusive venue? If your venue's package includes food and tables, add the venue and catering shares together and compare that to the package price.
  • Skipping a category? No planner, no videographer, a friend officiating? Give that share to the things you care about most.
  • Big guest list? Catering and rentals grow with every guest, while photos and attire don't. A large wedding usually needs a bigger catering share than the average.
  • Ready to set your own numbers? The wedding budget calculator lets you edit every percentage and see the dollars update. To check your total against your state, try the average wedding cost estimator.

Frequently asked questions

What are typical wedding budget percentages?

Based on average vendor spend in Zola's 2026 Wedding Cost Index, a typical split is roughly venue 18%, photography & video 18%, catering 15%, with the rest spread across planning, attire, music, rings, cake and stationery, plus a 9% contingency.

What is the biggest expense in a wedding budget?

The venue and catering together, and photography and video close behind. In our breakdown the top three categories take about 51% of the whole budget.

Why do the category averages add up to more than the average wedding?

Each category average only counts couples who paid for that category. Not everyone hires a videographer or a planner, so when you add every average together you get $42,851, which is more than a typical wedding costs. That is why we turn them into percentages instead of using the dollar amounts directly.

Is there a rule for how much to spend on a wedding venue?

Zola's rule of thumb is that the venue is about 17% of the total budget. Our breakdown shows 18% because it is worked out from average spend after a contingency, so the two numbers are close but not identical.

Should my wedding budget breakdown match these percentages?

No. They are a reference point. If your venue includes catering, or a friend is taking the photos, your split will look very different, and that is fine. Use these numbers to spot a category that looks much too high or too low.
